2016-05 MindfullnessMBSR is an intensive, structured 8-week program for learning mindfulness that has been shown to effectively help people to better cope with stress, chronic pain and difficult psychological states such as low mood, depression and anxiety etc. as well as helping with conditions such as insomnia.

However, mindfulness is also a tool for effectively enhancing positive qualities such as performance, concentration, attention regulation, emotional intelligence, creativity, etc.

In essence, MBSR is designed to help people learn new ways of relating to experiences in everyday life by learning a special way of paying attention.

This can help us see things differently, to be more focussed, grounded, to release mental and physical tension, increase our sense of confidence, give us more options and resources for facing the challenges of everyday life, and live our lives more fully.

Most people completing MBSR courses report lasting benefits, including:

    • Greater ability to handle stress and stressful situations
    • Greater capacity for relaxation
    • Greater sense of well-being
    • Greater capacity to deal with chronic pain and illness - Enhanced self-confidence
    • Greater resilience .... and the list goes on...

If you’re worried about any changes when you go to the loo, don't sit on it!

It can be easy to try and ignore bowel cancer symptoms, especially if you feel embarrassed about talking with your GP. However, we know that spotting the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer in the early stages can make a huge difference to how well and how quickly people get better.

Our Mobile Support Unit is visiting communities across Wales and England to offer free advice and information about bowel health. It's fast, free and you don't need an appointment.

So if you've noticed anything different when you go to the loo, pop along and see us. Changes can include going to the loo more often or if your poo has become looser and contains some blood. Or if you feel sore, pain or itching or if you have pain in your lower stomach.

If you have any other questions please give our free Support Line a call, 8am - 8pm, 365 days a year on 0808 808 1010.

2016-10 Walk With UsBack by popular demand, The Twilight Walk is returning to Chester on Sunday 9 October. If you can’t make it, there are still ways to get involved.

You can unite with our community by walking any 10k route in your local area on 2, 9 or 16 October. Simply contact our events team to request an Own Walk pack including suggestions on planning your walk, training tips and a The Twilight Walk t-shirt.

In 2015 The Twilight Walk raised an incredible £220,000 for vital research. This year we want to have a bigger and better impact than ever before and together, we can! We ask everyone doing The Twilight Walk to raise £100 and we’d love you to do the same on your Own Walk to help us stamp out brain tumours for good.

Please contact our Events Team via thetwilightwalk@thebraintumourcharity.org or 01252 749043 to let us know that you're planning to join us on Your Own Walk and to request a walker pack.

2016-10-talk-about-cancerWe want as many people as possible to feel confident talking about cancer, so we've taken the key elements of the Talk Cancer training and put together Cancer Research UK’s first MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) called Talking About Cancer.

Join thousands of people worldwide and learn effective techniques for having conversations that can help save lives.

The course tackles issues such as debunking cancer myths and overcoming barriers, whilst giving you the tips and tools to feel more confident talking about cancer. This might include how to talk to people about ways to reduce the risk of cancer and spotting cancer early.

The course includes the key elements of the Talk Cancer training, and has been developed by our Cancer Awareness Trainers, drawing on their wealth of experience of talking to patients, families and healthcare professionals.

The free, three-hour course starts on 10th October 2016 and you can learn at home at your own pace.

It is hosted by the UK’s leading online learning platform, FutureLearn.
