Money and Benefits

There are many benefits available to people affected by cancer. You may be able to claim because of the effects of your illness and treatment or because your income has been reduced. You may also be able to claim because you are caring for someone with cancer.

If you would like to talk informally to somebody about financial matters, you may wish to contact your local Macmillan Information and Support Coordinator who will be able to offer general advice and refer you to an appropriate organisation or specialist advisor. The Information Coordinators can also help patients/carers who may be eligible for a Macmillan Grant. This is a one-off payment (average £250) for adults, young people or children affected by cancer, to cover a wide range of practical needs including such things as heating bills, extra clothing or a much needed break. Eligibility will depend on financial circumstances.

Macmillan Benefits Advisors offer regular free advice sessions for anyone affected by cancer. These are held at the Macmillan Information and Support Centres. Please phone the Centre to check details and availability.

Tenovus Cancer Care also supports cancer patients and their families with welfare benefits advice, accessing grants and help with money matters. Three Tenovus Cancer Care advisors run advice clinics at the hospital- based Macmillan Information and Support Centres and a number of community venues. All are ‘drop-in’ and do not require any healthcare professional referral. However, if you are making a special journey, you should phone the advisor to check availability as these sessions are proving very popular.
